With an open mind and a healthy air of cynicism, HILARY FREEMAN puts "sixth sense" healer Robyn Welch's bizarre abilities to the test.
I'm in a London hotel room undergoing surgery on my heart, lungs, brain and liver. I'm not under anaesthetic, but I can't feel a thing, in fact, I've never felt so relaxed.
My Surgeon isn't using medical tools -she's not even touching me. She's sitting across the room, talking gently to my body parts. Within a hour, the treatment is complete and, feeling full of energy, I set off home.
I've just had a healing session with Robyn Elizabeth Welch, a diagnostic medical intuitive. Robyn claims to be the only person in the world with the ability to see inside , the human body and its energy field and repair them.
To understand how Robyn works you have to set aside all conventional wisdom about health, medicine and surgery. She says she heals people by tuning into her sixth sense and harnessing "lifeforce" energy. She uses this to scan the body psychically to determine if there are any weaknesses and then to "operate" on afflicted body parts.
Since her skills are intuitive, she doesn't need to be physical contact with her patients. She conducts healing sessions both in person and over the phone.
Over the years Robyn has treated thousands of patients across the world and claims to have cured cancer, epilepsy and heart disease. She's also claims to have cured herself of uterine cancer and restored herself to health after a car crash.
Robyn's new book, Conversations With The Body, the true sixth sense story of a Medical Intuitive (Hodder Mobuis, £10), tells how she developed her bizarre abilities.
Although it's a good read, I am not convinced. How can this divorced; middle aged Australian, with no medical training, diagnose and cure conditions such as cancer simply through the power of her mind? It's in an attempt to answer this that I find myself at Robyn 's Hotel room door. As I knock, I take a deep breath and try to suspend my disbelief I am open minded but cynical about her claims.
I am also curious to know whether she'll spot that I have Multiple Sclerosis (currently in remission) or if she'll pick up on any of my other problems -Sinusitis, Migraine, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Itchy Skin.
Robyn greets me like an old friend with a hug and a kiss. Dressed all in Pink with bouffant hair, and a beaming smile, she radiates warmth. She talks incessantly and with her pitched Australian accent and fondness for motherly endearments, one image comes straight to mind - Dame Edna Everage.
As I relaxed, Robyn turns on a tape recorder playing gentle New age music. "Close your eyes and try and see the colour Blue - the colour of God's energy", She tells me. I hear Robyn take a deep breath and she tells me she's entering my field. "Oh doll, it's good. You've got a lovely field ", she coos, "You're so creative, I can tell by the depth of your colour. But there are a few patches of interference. I need to do some housework".
I finding it hard to see the colour Blue but as she speaks I find purple lights coming into minds eye. Although I am fully conscious and not in a hypnotic state, I begin to feel more relaxed than I have in years. "Oh, the interference is lifting so easily", she sighs. "Now let me look at your Blood. Yes. It's good. Let me just make the cells a little more even and perfect. There's a little lethargy there, I'll boost them". My mind is wandering when she says something which shock me back into full concentration: "You 're Vegetarian aren't you? I can see it in your Blood and your Tissues". I am a Vegetarian. I have been since I was 12. Can she really see inside me - Or is it a lucky guess?
"You've got to start eating Meat protein ", she orders. "If you don't a least start eating Fish I can't work with you. In the next few years you're body will start to break down and you'll become seriously ill".
She then tells me she's moving through my body, working on each individual organ and gland. She says my Glands aren't working in harmony, my Liver works in "Fits and Starts" and my Gall Bladder needs to relax. I have a happy Spleen which, she says, reflects my personality, can't confirm or deny any of this but some of her observations are accurate she notices I have inflammation between my Neck and Shoulder, which is true. My Bladder reveals past infections I used to suffer Cystitis, I have a weak left knee and my Balance isn't great. My Immune system is down, probably caused by overuse of Antibiotics. She also notices my Sinuses are blocked and that I have pressure behind my right eye the very spot where I get crippling headache.
But she doesn't see that I have Multiple Sclerosis when I challenge her, she claims she doesn't apply Medical terminology to what she sees however, she says her work should prevent it's progression. As she works on a Organ with her "Energy Laser", she talks to it affectionately, encouraging it to work harder and better.
When the session ends, Robyn warns me that over next few days I might suffer Headaches and Nausea, Urinate excessively and feel tired as my Body begins to heal and eliminate toxins. Sure enough, next day I feel terrible and can't stop going to the loo. Is this merely the power of suggestion or has Robyn does something to my Body? Before my first healing session I decide to test Robyn by eating Fish. As soon as she enters my "Field" she tells me my Blood cells, Tissues and Immune System are looking better. "You've been eating Fish, haven't you? " she exclaims. "I can tell".
Over the next few weeks I have 5 phone sessions. I find that I am sleeping better and have more energy. I have only had 1 headache, rather than 2/3 a week I usually suffer.
Has Robyn healed me? Only time will tell although I am still cynical, I am certain she is No Charlatan. She truly believes in her abilities and has dedicated to them forgoing a permanent home, social and family life to heal people.
Recently, she started organising workshop to teach others. She believes healing is a ability we all have, if we are prepared to develop it, and is certain that in 100 years her techniques will be used by conventional doctors.
"I am just ahead of my time, darling" she says, "the worlds not ready for me yet".
